Community Flushing Recommendations
Only Flush the 3 Ps: Human waste and toilet paper are the only items that should go down the toilet.
No Wipes, Even "Flushable" Ones: Wipes (baby, disinfecting, facial) do not break down and cause major sewer system clogs.
Prohibited Items: Never flush grease/oil, dental floss, cotton swabs, sanitary products, diapers, bandages, cigarettes, or cat litter.
Medicine Disposal: Do not flush unused or expired medications; use Drug Enforcement Administration (DEA) drug take-back programs instead.
"When in Doubt, Throw it Out": If it is not toilet paper or waste, put it in the trash.
Following these guidelines protects against expensive home plumbing repairs and sewage backups in the community
What to do after hours with a backup?
Immediate After-Hours Actions:
Call the City Immediately: Do not call a plumber first, as they cannot fix city-side issues and you may incur unnecessary costs. Call the emergency municipal number (what number?) to report the backup.
Stop Water Usage: Turn off all plumbing fixtures. A clogged main sewer line means any water used in the home will backup, potentially worsening the situation.
Safety First: Turn off electricity to affected areas if it is safe to do so. Avoid entering standing, contaminated water.
Secure the Area: Keep children and pets away from contaminated areas.
After Reporting the Emergency:
Identify Responsibility: If the blockage is in the city's main line, crews will clear it. If it is in your private lateral pipe (between the house and the city main), you will need to call a plumber.
Cleanup Procedures: Immediately remove water and soiled items (carpet, furniture) using wet/dry vacuums.
Disinfect: Clean affected areas with detergent and sanitize with a 10% bleach solution.
Document Damages: Take photos and keep receipts for cleanup costs, as some cities offer reimbursement or have no-fault damage policies.
