Recreational Burn Pit Rules & Regulations
The City of Clinton DOES allow for the use of recreational fire pits. The following rules and regulations have been established to ensure safety and must be adhered to by all citizens wishing to use a fire pit for recreational purposes.
What Is A Recreational Fire? A recreational fire is defined as an outdoor fire where the fuel is contained in an incinerator, outdoor fireplace, barbeque grill, or barbeque pit. It is used for pleasure, ceremonial, cooking, warmth or similar purposes.
What Are the Requirements for Use of a Recreational Fire Pit?
FIRE PIT CONSTRUCTION DIMENSIONS: To be considered a recreational fire pit, the total inner circumference of the pit can be no more that 3 ft. with a maximum total overall height of 2 ft.
FIRE PIT CONSTRUCTION MATERIALS: The recreational pit must be constructed of non-combustible materials such as masonry stones or metal.
FIRE PIT LOCATION: There must be a minimum distance of 15’ between the recreational fire pit and any combustible structures such as: buildings, sheds, wooden fences, landscaping, etc.
Fire pits CAN NOT be placed on a wooden surface such as a deck OR on combustible mulch.
- All recreational fire pits MUST be inspected by the fire department before initial use. To have your fire pit inspected, contact fire headquarters at (660) 885-2560.
- Only permitted items may be burned in a recreational fire pit as defined on upper section of this page. Items being burned must fit inside the burn pit and not extend outside of the burn pit.
- There is NO FEE to use a recreational fire pit. Consideration should be given to current fire weather conditions when deciding to burn in your recreational fire pit. For information on current conditions, contact fire headquarters. Recreational fire pit use is NOT PERMITTED when under a city wide burn restriction.
- Any person using a recreational fire pit must understand that they are personally responsible for any property damages that may occur as a result of conducting an outdoor burn. While in use, the recreational fire pit must be supervised by an adult (age 18+).
